Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Awards

S. Sterling Munro

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation makes an annual gift to the Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center at the University of Washington in honor of the late S. Sterling Munro, a former senior aide to Senator Jackson, noted for his outstanding public service record and leadership qualities. These monies are awarded annually to students and faculty at the selection of the Carlson Center.

During Munro's 25 years of public service to Washington state and the nation, he was extensively involved in natural resources legislation, playing an instrumental role in creating the North Cascades National Park, and contributing to the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act, the National Environmental Protection Act, and the Youth Conservation Corps Act. Munro also served on the board of directors of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and the board of trustees of Central Washington University.

The Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a life-long commitment to public service by providing outstanding University of Washington undergraduates with the opportunity to explore their potential for service and leadership in the community. The fellowship was established by the Foundation in 1993 and is administered by the Edward Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center at the University of Washington.

In addition to the student fellowship, The Munro Public Service Teaching Award is given annually to a University of Washington faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in community-based instruction, including service learning, public service internships and community partnership projects. Teaching award recipients are inducted into the University of Washington Teaching Academy. As Teaching Academy members, award recipients are eligible to participate in a variety of Academy-sponsored projects and events to further excellence in the teaching and learning process at the University.
